The History of St. Paul UMC

St. Paul, a Methodist congregation has worshipped on the corner of Davis and Mulberry in Fayette, Mo since 1856. Records clearly indicate that both black and white Methodist worshipped in a frame building during the pre-Civil War era. After 1869 the structure became property of the present St. Paul Congregation. The congregation kept the name "Burton Chapel" for some time. The white Methodists moved up the hill to the Central Methodist College campus to form Centenary Church, later to be known as Linn Memorial. The congregation that stayed at the corner of Davis and Mulberry streets became predominantly African American. In 1870, the congregation became affiliated with the Methodist Episcopal Church.

After the 1906, the congregation changed its name to St. Paul Methodist Episcopal Church.  The name was changed again in 1939 when the name Episcopal was dropped by the General Conference.  Therefore, the church adopted the name St. Paul Methodist church until 1965 where it became known as the present St. Paul United Methodist Church.
